Building Science Principles You Should Know

The Building Science Principles (BSP) Reference Guide can help you, as a homeowner or renter, better understand home performance and building science. Building science is the idea that the different systems, such as insulation, windows, and heating and cooling equipment, interact to affect a home’s overall comfort, safety, and energy efficiency.

The 275-page guide is available in Spanish
and English, both digitally and in print.

Not every homeowner is a contractor, so we developed the BSP Reference Guide to help you understand what you’re getting into before buying or renting, or prior to making any home improvements. By preparing yourself with the knowledge of how your home works, you can prevent creating an unsafe or unhealthy situation that could cost you down the road.

The BSP guide is easy-to-read and includes high quality pictures that visually explain the text. This makes it easy to compare what is in the guide to what is happening in your own home.

About the Building Science Principles (BSP) Reference Guide

Available in both English and Spanish, a print and digital version, the BSP teaches the fundamentals of building science, or how your house is a system of interacting parts. The guide focuses specifically on heat and insulation, air and air sealing, moisture and moisture control, as well as conservation strategies. Learning the ins and outs of how your home works as a system of these parts could help you and your family be more comfortable, safe, and healthy.

You can find more information about purchasing the BSP Guide here. Please reach out to bsp@bpi.org with any questions.
